Dr. H. Mason Hicks Photograph Collection
Content Description
This collections holds 84 black and white photographs of a voyage on the Hussar to the Galapagos Islands including photographs of Marjorie Merriweather Post, Nedenia and E.F. Hutton as well as other passengers and crew. The collection also holds photographs depicting an old navy tradition called the “crossing the line” ceremony, an initiation rite for those who have never crossed the equator.

Biographical / Historical
Dr. H. Mason Hicks was a physician and former chief of medicine at Doctors Hospital in Manhattan. He earned degrees from the University of Tennessee and Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons before practicing in Manhattan for over fifty years. Dr. Hicks was hired to be the Hussar V's ship doctor for the voyage to the Galapagos Islands in the early 1930s.
